Paul's Story

In high school, I tried a simple strength training protocol to condition myself better for the basketball season. During a basketball practice a few weeks in, one of the coaches commented that this was the best conditioned I’d ever been. I was faster and stronger. And it felt great knowing that I was a better version of myself. Though I did not continue training after the season ended, this memory stuck as the base fitness level I wanted for myself.

When I first learned about adaptive resistance from my dad, I was eager to experience the ARX machines and I was quickly convinced. Not only were the workouts fun and effective, but I could also instantly see my progress compared to previous workouts—which, for a competitive person like myself, could provide extra weekly motivation.

I am happy to share my enthusiasm and knowledge with everyone who joins us at Jekel Strength Club to experience the benefits of adaptive resistance for yourself. My goal as a trainer at Jekel Strength Club is to help people realize their potential and become stronger versions of themselves through effective, efficient, and enjoyable workouts.

Ross's Story

When I was a gangly 13-year-old kid, a slightly older neighbor commented on my lack of chest muscles. Instead of excuses, I decided to do something about it.

I started reading and using workout routines from Franco Columbu and Dr Fred Hatfield (Dr Squat). Franco Columbu’s book included “chest expansion exercises,” which I hit pretty hard. Dr Hatfield’s book emphasized whole-body weight-lifting workouts for power, strength, and heart health. To prove his point, he would challenge runners to VO2Max “races” and would beat them every time. I quickly grew “musculoskeletally” strong and cardiovascularly fit, and when I wasn’t working out, local dairy farmers hired me to load heavy hay bales into their barns.

The work paid off. In fact, the same neighbor later quipped, “I can see your pecs now—if I squint.”

In college, free access to weight training equipment was a dream come true, but it wasn’t always easy to find willing students to spot each other. My workout routines were sub-optimal at best and dangerous at the worst. While in graduate school, I read Kinesiology of Exercise by Michael Yessis, which motivated me to lift with emphasis on proper form. I was enjoying bulking up and making strength gains when I was hit with a life-changing medical diagnosis.

I became very sick in 1992, dropping from 195 lbs to 155 lbs in a short time. The diagnosis: Ulcerative Colitis, an “incurable” digestive disease that gave me intense gut pain and left me anemic. Medication seemed to help get the disease into occasional remission, but training was virtually impossible. Additional physical stress overwhelmed my system and led to increased pain and suffering. Lifting was put on indefinite hold.

After years of treatments, my doctor told me, “Don’t worry, Ross. I’ll help you keep your large intestine as long as possible.” I suddenly realized that he might be thinking about removing body parts, and I wanted nothing to do with it. I dreamed of six pack abs not a six pack of colostomy bags. I renewed efforts to use diet to control my disease symptoms. A decade-long wellness journey of chance meetings and internet searches led to a lifestyle change that eventually gave relief from all symptoms…with all organs INTACT! After a couple years of stable health, I began to wonder, “Do I dare start lifting again?”

I bought myself a home gym that used a free-weight lever system to lift safely without a spotter. Because the lever carries some of the weight, I had to load plate after plate during longer and more frequent workouts for enough progressive overload to make gains. What I really wanted was a way to workout more efficiently, to lift more safely, and to make progress more quickly since I was making up for lost time.

After some research, I purchased a PeakFitPro machine. This machine enables and measures max contraction isometric exercises, which spare the joints while giving an intense workout. I switched my routine from 4 hour-long workouts per week on the lever system to one 20-minute workout per week on the PeakFitPro. While achieving measurable strength gains and fat loss with less effort, I still found the machine difficult to operate consistently and I lost some size since I was no longer exercising muscles through their useful range of motion.

Not completely satisfied with this new routine, I decided to visit ARX Fit in Austin, TX to try out their Adaptive Resistance Exercise equipment. The standard demo workout on the ARX Alpha and the ARX Omni machines was nothing short of the ultimate workout, the kind of workout I’ve always wanted. It was safe, efficient, effective, measurable, and enjoyable. There was minimal setup for maximal muscle stimulation through the effective range of motion, all with the same 20 minutes of effort per week.

I was hooked!

I wanted to workout on the ARX machines again and to make ARX workouts available to everyone, so we decided as a family to start Jekel Strength Club to bring this adaptive resistance exercise technology to Lynnwood and the greater Seattle area.

Jekel Strength Club is the culmination of a lifetime of wellness and fitness experience. I am passionate about helping people experience the best, most cutting-edge resistance training available.
